Tile Waste Factor: How Much Extra?
Bag yields can be cited to a data sheet. Tile waste usually cannot. The tile calculator still needs a starting overage so the order square footage is not a fantasy flat plane. This page explains what those defaults are—and what they are not.
The defaults we ship
- Floor, straight: 10% — cuts at walls and a few broken pieces on a simple rectangle.
- Wall / shower: 15% — more cuts at niches, curbs, valves, and corners. Multi-plane surrounds: shower tile calculator.
- Diagonal / pattern: 20% — angled cuts and complex layouts throw more scrap.
Each row in the materials JSON names the source as a trade convention and points at methodology, not a fake TDS URL. That labeling is the point of this site: contractors can raise or lower the field without thinking we claimed a standard we do not have.
Why we refuse to “cite” a handbook we don’t have
Competing calculators often print “industry standard 10%” with the confidence of a yield table. If the number is not on a manufacturer sheet or a dated standard we can quote, calling it a yield is marketing. AdSense reviewers and careful estimators both notice when every page invents authority. We would rather say “convention—edit me” than paste a handbook citation we did not verify.
Attic stock is a different pad
Some manufacturer FAQs discuss buying extra for future repairs so dye lots match—context you will see discussed around retail guidance (for example Daltile’s consumer FAQ language about attic stock). That is not the same claim as “10% because of cuts on install day.” If you want both cut overage and a repair box, add them consciously. Stacking two silent 10% factors is how a small bathroom becomes a garage full of orphan cartons.
When to move the slider
- Raise waste for herringbone, many miters, or brittle large-format handling.
- Lower waste for a simple rectangle with modular sizes and clean stock.
- Keep wall/shower higher when niches and benches multiply cuts.
- Re-check after the layout chalk lines exist—not only from the room sketch.
Piece math after waste is in how many tiles do you need. Grout does not use this waste field; joint width and tile size drive grout quantity.
How the calculator uses the number
order_sq_ft = area_sq_ft × (100 + waste%) / 100
Application mode only picks the starting percent. Change it. The working on the tool page shows net area and waste-adjusted order side by side so you can see the pad. That transparency is the product; the default is just a reasonable first click.
Worked sense-check on a 100 sq ft floor
At 10% waste, 100 sq ft of floor becomes 110 sq ft to order. At 20% diagonal waste, the same floor becomes 120 sq ft. That extra 10 sq ft is not “free tile for the next bathroom” — it is the angled cuts and breakage budget for this layout. If you also want a full spare carton for dye-lot attic stock, add that carton after you see the waste-adjusted order, not by secretly typing 30% into the waste field and forgetting why.
On a 40 sq ft shower wall field at 15% waste, order is 46 sq ft. Raising to 20% because of a busy niche plan lands at 48 sq ft. Small rooms make percentage swings look tiny in absolute square feet but still decide whether you open a second box of a special-order color.
Patterns that earn a higher percent
Herringbone, chevron, and basketweave create many short offcuts that will not reuse cleanly. Large-format tile on an out-of-square room forces tapered rips along one wall. Mosaic sheets that must turn corners often lose a partial sheet that cannot move to the next wall. Those are the jobs where people who “always use 10%” end up shopping mid-install.
Conversely, a modular 12×24 floor in a dead-square rectangle with a hidden cut edge under base cabinets can finish under 10% if the crew is careful and the stock is clean. The calculator will not punish you for typing 7% — it will show a lower order square footage. Just remember that a single cracked plank late in the job can erase that optimism if the dye lot is gone.
What waste is not
Waste is not thinset coverage, not grout bags, and not labor hours. It is not a structural safety factor. It is not permission to skip measuring. And it is not a substitute for reading the carton — if the box already quotes coverage assuming a joint, do not also inflate face area in the piece math. Keep waste as one visible lever on net tiled area; keep grout on the grout tool; keep piece size honest. When a helper asks “how much extra,” point them at the waste field on the calculator and the net-versus-order lines in the working — that is the whole conversation.
