How Many Deck Joists Do You Need
Board count gets the search traffic; joist count still empties the truck. The deck board & joist calculator runs both. This guide is only the joist line—spacing along the length, members spanning the width—so you can check the framing ticket before the boards.
The formula
joists = ceil((length_ft × 12) ÷ spacing_in) + 1
joist_linear_ft = joists × width_ft
Length is the direction you space joists along. Spacing is inches on center. The + 1 is the end joist. Linear feet assume each joist spans the deck width—the same assumption the site’s calculator uses for that output line.
Worked examples
12 ft long @ 16 in o.c. → ceil(144 ÷ 16) + 1 = 10 joists
16 ft long @ 16 in o.c. → 13 joists
12 ft long @ 12 in o.c. → 13 joists
10 joists × 10 ft wide → 100 lin ft of joist stock
Closing from 16 in to 12 in on a 12 ft deck adds 3 joists in this math. That is why “use 16 everywhere” is a bad habit when the board manufacturer or diagonal layout wants tighter framing.
Spacing is a sourced choice, not our code claim
This page does not publish span tables or treat 16 in on center as a national requirement. Composite and PVC boards often ship with their own maximum joist spacing—sometimes tighter for diagonal decks or commercial loads. Enter the spacing from the product you are fastening. Lumber decks follow the framing plan and local rules; the calculator will not invent them.
How this ties to board count
Joist spacing can change which board and gap combination is allowed, which changes row math. What joist count skips
Beams, posts, footings, hangers, blocking, and railings are out of scope here. Diagonal decking may need extra framing attention beyond a single spacing number. If your plan has doubles under seams or picture-frame borders, add those members explicitly—they will not appear from ceil + 1 alone.
Length, width, and which way joists run
On this site, “length” is the direction you space joists along, and each joist spans the “width.” If your sketch labels the long side of the deck as width because that is how you face the house, swap the labels before you type. Getting length and width backwards does not change board rows the same way it changes joist count — boards and joists are different axes — so a single swapped pair of numbers can make the framing ticket and the decking ticket disagree.
Picture a 10×16 deck: if joists span the 10 ft direction and are spaced along 16 ft at 16 in on center, you get 13 joists and 130 linear feet. If instead joists span 16 ft and space along 10 ft, both the count and the linear feet change. Always match the framing plan’s joist direction, not a casual “longer side” habit. Label length and width on the sketch before anyone types numbers into the calculator.
Stock lengths and butt joints
Linear feet of joist stock is not the same as “how many 2×10×12s to buy” until you pick a stock length. If each joist spans 10 ft and you buy 12 ft stock, you have two feet of scrap per member unless you can reuse it as blocking. If the span is 12 ft clear and you only have 12 ft stock, bearing details matter — this guide will not size the beam or the hanger. Count members first, then map them onto the lengths your yard stocks.
Butt joints in joists (splices) are a framing detail, not something ceil + 1 invents. If your plan doubles joists under a seam or adds a beam break, add those pieces on the sketch. The calculator’s joist line is the evenly spaced field set for a simple rectangle.
Diagonal boards and tighter spacing
Many composite manufacturers tighten maximum joist spacing when boards run diagonal. That is why the deck calculator’s diagonal path also talks about joists, not only board waste. If you change from a straight layout at 16 in on center to a diagonal layout that requires 12 in, recompute joists — do not keep the old framing ticket and only pad board waste.
