How a Deck Board Calculator Actually Works
If you’ve ever estimated a deck from square footage alone, you’ve probably come up a few rows short. Boards don’t sit edge-to-edge like tile. Each row eats the board’s actual face width plus the gap that sheds water and lets the material move. Miss that, and the lumber-yard total looks fine on paper until you’re mid-install with empty bays and a Saturday left.
That’s the job of a deck board calculator: take the dimensions you already know, apply the width and gap that match the product you’re buying, add a waste allowance that fits the layout, and hand you a purchase count you can check against the working. What you enter (and why each input matters)
Deck dimensions — length and width
Enter the finished deck footprint in feet. Orientation matters more than people expect. Most takeoffs treat “width” as the direction the boards run across — the dimension that gets divided into rows. “Length” is the run of each board, which sets how many stock lengths you need. Swap them and you still get a number — just the wrong shopping list.
A 10×16 deck with boards running the 16-foot direction needs fewer, longer rows than the same footprint with boards running the 10-foot direction. Same square footage. Different linear feet. Different board count if your stock length doesn’t match the run. In the tool, set board length to the stock you can actually buy (12 ft, 16 ft, 20 ft, and so on).
Board width — actual face, not the nominal label
A “1×6” or “5/4×6” is not 6 inches wide. Dressed softwood hits 5.5 inches actual face, per the American Softwood Lumber Standard and common retail listings. Most Trex and TimberTech composite lines use that same 5.5-inch face — but you still confirm the SKU, because product lines change and coverage claims drift.
The calculator never multiplies “sq ft ÷ 0.5” and calls it done. It uses face width in the row divisor: covered width per row equals board face width plus gap. That’s why brand choice shows up before you ever talk price per linear foot.
Spacing gaps — board-to-board, not joist spacing
Gap is the quiet lever. Widen it, and each row occupies more of the deck — so you need fewer rows. Tighten it, and the board count climbs. Two traps to avoid: confusing gap with joist spacing (joists are framing underneath, usually 16 inches on center straight / 12 inches for many diagonals), and assuming every brand agrees with itself.
Trex’s planning pages have used 1/4 inch while some hidden-fastener docs cite 3/16 inch. Waste factor
Waste is not a brand yield. It’s a trade buffer for offcuts, defects, miscuts, and the board you rip wrong on a windy afternoon. This site starts at 10% for a straight rectangle and about 15% for diagonal or herringbone layouts — labeled as conventions in the materials data, not manufacturer TDS figures. Raise them for picture frames, complex shapes, or picky face selection.
The calculator adds waste to net linear feet before dividing by board length, then rounds up to whole boards. That order matters: adding 10% after you’ve already rounded stock lengths under-orders.
The math, one line at a time
Here’s the same sequence the tool walks through:
- Convert deck width to inches.
- Rows = ceil(width inches ÷ (board width + gap)).
- Linear feet = rows × deck length (feet).
- With waste = linear feet × (1 + waste%).
- Boards to buy = ceil(wasted linear feet ÷ stock board length).
Worked example — 10 ft wide × 16 ft long, 5.5-inch boards, 0.125-inch gap, 16 ft stock, 10% waste:
- Per row = 5.5 + 0.125 = 5.625″
- Rows = (10 × 12) ÷ 5.625 → 22 rows (rounded up)
- Linear feet = 22 × 16 = 352 lf
- With 10% waste → 25 boards in 16 ft stock
Flip the Trex planning gap to 0.25 inch on the same deck (divisor 5.75″) and you get 21 rows and 24 boards at the same waste and stock length — one fewer board than the 0.125-inch lumber preset on this size. Same footprint. Different brand preset. On some widths the ceil() lands on the same row count anyway; that’s why you re-run the tool instead of assuming “wider gap always means fewer boards.”

Brand choice changes the final board count
Trex vs. TimberTech vs. pressure-treated lumber is not just a price-per-foot decision. It changes the numbers inside the calculator. Run the same deck size through each preset before you commit — the difference is usually a handful of boards on a typical deck, small on a spreadsheet and loud at the register when a composite color takes two weeks to restock.

When the answer still looks off
- Diagonal layouts. Raise waste; confirm joists at 12 inches on center where the board maker requires it.
- Runs longer than stock. Every butt joint needs a joist landing — buy longer boards when you can.
- Hidden fasteners. The clip often sets the gap; override the preset to match the clip sheet.
- Picture frames / borders. Perimeter boards are a second takeoff; don’t bury them inside a flat waste percent and hope.
