Why this depth governed

The hero number is not a single preferred rule — it is the maximum of the applicable candidates shown in the working. For the default 6 ft wood demo, Quikrete shallow is 24 in, Quikrete conservative is 36 in, and governing embedment is 36 in (quikrete conservative endpoint (½ of above-ground height)). Enter a deeper local frost or product requirement and that value becomes governing when it wins the max.

These are the endpoints of Quikrete’s published ⅓–½ range for above-ground post height, not universal code requirements. Local frost depth, product instructions, soil, wind, and gate-post requirements can require a different result. The calculator uses the greatest applicable value.

Quikrete comparison

Quikrete’s current Setting Posts in Concrete guide states dig one-third to one-half of the post’s above-ground length, plus about six inches for gravel. This calculator shows both endpoints of that range so the band is visible. An older Quikrete project sheet used different wording (one-third of overall post length) — cited in Sources; we do not silently mix the two equations. The planning max still prefers the deeper (½) above-ground endpoint unless local or CLFMI figures are greater.

In chain-link mode the tool also evaluates CLFMI’s commercial footing baseline: 24 inches minimum through 4 ft fence height, plus 3 inches per foot of height above 4 ft, with hole diameter about four times post outside diameter. CLFMI still warns that frost, soil, height, and wind can require more — enter those as local depth when you have them.

Frost, soil, wind, and gates

This site does not ship a national frost-depth database. Weak soil, privacy slats, high wind, corners, and gate posts often need deeper or larger footings than a line-post planning baseline. Frequently asked questions

How deep should a fence post be?

There is no single national answer. For a 6 ft wood fence this tool’s Quikrete shallow endpoint is 24 in and the conservative endpoint is 36 in; governing embedment is the maximum of applicable baselines and any local depth you enter (36 in in the default demo). Treat that as a planning estimate only.

What is the difference between embedment, excavation, gravel, and concrete depth?

Embedment is how deep the post sits in concrete. Quikrete adds about 6 in of gravel below the post — excavation is embedment plus that gravel. Concrete volume uses embedment depth only; gravel is not filled with concrete.

Does this calculator approve my fence for a permit?

No. It is not code approval, structural design, or a permit requirement. Local frost maps, soil conditions, AHJ rules, and product installation sheets override this site’s planning baselines.

How does chain-link depth differ from wood?

Chain-link mode also checks CLFMI’s commercial footing baseline (24 in minimum plus 3 in per foot of fence height above 4 ft). Governing depth is still the maximum of Quikrete ½, CLFMI, and your local entry.

Why show both one-third and one-half Quikrete depths?

Quikrete’s current Setting Posts guide states a ⅓–½ range of above-ground length. Showing both endpoints makes the range transparent; this site’s planning max uses the deeper (½) endpoint unless a local or CLFMI figure is greater.

Where do I get frost depth?

From your local building department, frost map, or product sheet — not from this site. We do not invent a national frost-depth database. Enter the required embedment in the local depth field.
