How Deep Should a Fence Post Be?
Fence-post depth depends on fence height, frost, soil, wind, gates, and local requirements. This guide explains why those values can disagree and which requirements take priority.
What actually sets depth
Fence height and type change the lever arm of wind on the posts. Post size and hole diameter change how much soil and concrete resist that lever. Frost heave can lift shallow footings in climates where the ground freezes hard. Manufacturer installation sheets for a specific vinyl or chain-link system can require deeper or wider footings than a backyard wood privacy line. Municipal frost maps and permit conditions override any website default — and they should.
That is why this site refuses to dress a single national inch-depth up as “the answer.” The tool shows a conservative planning baseline, shows the gravel excavation separately, and takes the maximum when you enter a local required depth.
What Quikrete publishes
Quikrete’s current Setting Posts in Concrete guide literally says dig one-third to one-half of the post’s above-ground length, plus 6 inches for gravel. An older Quikrete project sheet literally says one-third of the overall post length, plus 6 inches. Those wordings are not the same equation; we cite both on the methodology page and do not pretend they match.
For a 6 ft fence above grade, the half-height planning baseline is:
6 × 12 × 0.5 = 36 in embedment
The shallow end of the same Quikrete range would be one-third of above-ground height (24 in for a 6 ft fence) before gravel. Choosing the deeper endpoint for the planning baseline is a deliberate bias toward “at least as deep as the published range allows,” not a claim that half is required everywhere. Excavation shown in the calculator adds the 6 in gravel layer (42 in dig in this example) while concrete volume uses only the embedment depth.
Enter your frost or product depth in “Local required depth” and the tool takes the maximum of the planning baseline and your number. If your AHJ wants 42 in embedment for frost, that wins over a 36 in half-height baseline.
Chain-link footing baseline
The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute product manual (CLF-PM0610 §3.2.A) gives a commercial footing baseline: 24 inches minimum, plus 3 inches for each foot of fence height above 4 feet. A 6 ft chain-link fence therefore checks:
24 + (6 − 4) × 3 = 30 in
For an 8 ft chain-link height the same formula is 24 + (8 − 4) × 3 = 36 in. The calculator selects the greater of the Quikrete-style half-height baseline, that CLFMI check (in chain mode), and your local entry. Privacy slats increase wind load—do not treat the 10 ft line-post spacing maximum or the footing baseline as structural permission when the product guide or engineer says otherwise.
Embedment versus excavation
Two numbers confuse people at the dig: how deep the post sits in concrete, and how deep you actually dig the hole. Quikrete’s gravel layer sits under the post. Digging 42 in for a 36 in embedment plus 6 in gravel does not mean you fill 42 in of hole with concrete. Hole diameter and concrete
Quikrete’s general post guide uses a hole about three times the post width. CLFMI uses a larger multiplier for chain-link (four times outside diameter in our materials data). Deeper or wider holes raise concrete volume even when bag yields stay fixed. An over-augered hole is the quiet way a “two bags per post” habit fails on the third hole. Gates and high wind
Gate posts and long solid privacy runs often need larger or deeper footings than intermediate line posts. The calculator applies one conservative hole to every counted post so the working stays auditable; oversized gate details should be calculated separately from the manufacturer sheet or the installer, not averaged into a number nobody can check. Frost, soil, and why “half the height” is not a climate map
Half of above-ground height is a planning baseline from reading Quikrete’s published range conservatively. It is not a frost-depth map. Clay that holds water, sandy soil that drains, and fill that was never compacted all change how a footing behaves through a winter. If your AHJ publishes a frost line deeper than the baseline, enter that number and let the calculator take the max. If a vinyl manufacturer’s sheet demands a deeper or wider footing than the baseline, the product sheet wins.
