Planning Fence Gates, Corners, End Posts, and Terminal Posts

Most bad fence takeoffs start with one perimeter number. The fence materials calculator expects a measured infill run and an explicit extra-post count because corners and gates are layout decisions, not a percentage. This guide is the pencil-and-paper workflow before you touch the inputs.

Measurement workflow

  1. Sketch the property line or fence path—paper is enough.
  2. Mark every end, corner, and change of direction.
  3. Mark every gate opening and measure its clear width.
  4. Break the path into straight segments between those points.
  5. Measure each segment’s infill length (exclude the gate clear opening).
  6. Decide terminal / gate / corner posts for each break—chain-link calls the stretch ends terminals; wood and vinyl still need structural posts at those locations.
  7. Enter one segment (or a summed infill total if spacings match) in the calculator, then add extras in “Extra gate / corner posts.” Different lengths should be calculated separately so rounding stays honest.

Why a single long-run formula fails

ceil(total ÷ spacing) + 1 assumes one uninterrupted line. A rectangular yard has four corners. A gate inserts two posts and removes fabric or pickets from the run. Grade breaks and direction changes can force additional terminals. Undercounting here shows up as a frantic second trip for posts, not as a small waste percent.

Worked multi-segment example

Suppose three sides of a yard: 40 ft, 30 ft, and 40 ft, with a 4 ft gate clear opening cut out of the third side. Planning spacing 8 ft on wood/vinyl. Infill lengths are 40, 30, and 36 ft.

Side A: ceil(40 ÷ 8) + 1 = 6 posts

Side B: ceil(30 ÷ 8) + 1 = 5 posts

Side C infill: ceil(36 ÷ 8) + 1 = 6 posts

Naive single perimeter (110 ft): 15 posts — wrong shape

You cannot simply add 6 + 5 + 6 either: shared corner posts would be double-counted. The clean approach is to treat each straight segment’s intermediate posts, then assign corner/gate posts once in the extras field (or run the calculator per segment with ends handled consciously). The naive perimeter total (15) ignores the gate opening and the corners entirely.

Chain-link terminals versus line posts

CLFMI’s product manual caps typical line-post spacing at 10 ft on center and discusses footing baselines for commercial work. Fabric stretches between terminals; line posts support the mesh in between. The calculator’s chain mode therefore counts terminals and line posts separately. Privacy slats increase wind—closer spacing may be required by the product guide even when the maximum allows 10 ft.

Every gate and corner is another terminal opportunity. If you only enter total mesh feet and forget terminals, the fabric number can look fine while the post list is short.

Gates are assemblies, not infill

Exclude the clear opening from the run you type into the calculator. Order the gate as its own assembly (wood, vinyl kit, or chain-link gate) from the product you are installing. Hinge and latch posts often want larger or deeper footings than line posts—depth planning stays on fence post depth, and bag math on concrete bags per post.

Double-counting corners without crying

A practical bookkeeping method: run the calculator once per straight infill segment with “extra” posts set to zero, write down intermediate post counts, then on paper assign one post to each corner and each gate side. Alternately, enter the longest continuous infill that shares one spacing, put all corners and gates into the extras field, and verify against the sketch that every break has a post. Either method beats typing the full perimeter and hoping.

Grade breaks and steps in the fence line are easy to miss on a flat sketch. Walk the line once with flags before you finalize the extras count. A stepped privacy run can need a post at each step even when the plan view looks like one straight edge.

Separate runs and shared posts

Two fences that meet at a corner may share a post or may need two posts tied together — that is a construction detail. For materials planning, decide whether one post serves both runs before you sum extras. The calculator cannot see your neighbor’s fence or the HOA’s gate standard; it can only add the extras you declare.
