Fence Material Takeoff: Wood vs. Vinyl vs. Chain-Link
A wood fence material calculator and a chain-link mesh takeoff are not the same shopping list with the noun swapped. The fence materials calculator switches formulas by type for that reason. This page is the cheat sheet for what each mode counts—and what it honestly refuses to invent.

Wood: pickets, not “panels”
Wood mode treats the face of the fence as pickets: actual board width plus the gap you set, then waste for culls and end cuts. Starting width defaults to NIST PS 20-25’s 5½ in minimum dressed-dry width for nominal 6-inch softwood, but you still measure the stack. Vinyl: sections by center-to-center
Vinyl systems are manufactured in sections with a published center-to-center width. Counting them like loose pickets under-orders or over-orders depending on how you fudge the gap. The calculator asks for that section width and returns whole sections for the infill run. Rails and brackets often come as part of a system kit—those stay on the manufacturer sheet, not in a generic “two rails per bay” invention.
Chain-link: mesh feet and terminals
Chain-link shopping starts with linear feet of fabric and a post list that separates terminals from line posts. CLFMI’s product manual (CLF-PM0610) supplies the commercial baselines this site uses for maximum line-post spacing and footing checks—not a residential code stamp. Fittings, tension bands, and brace kits vary by height and system; inventing a universal fittings pack would be dishonest.
Why rails stay out
A universal “two rails per section” rule is not honest across 4 ft decorative, 6 ft privacy, vinyl systems with integral rails, and chain-link with tension wire. Until we can model rails from manufacturer height/type guidance with exposed assumptions, the calculator states that rail quantity is not calculated. That omission is deliberate E-E-A-T, not a missing feature checkbox.
Shared pieces across types
Every mode still needs a measured infill run (gates excluded), post-depth planning, and concrete from hole geometry. How to read the table without over-trusting it
The comparison table is a map of units, not a shopping list generator. “Yes” in the calculator column means the tool will show working for that quantity with sourced or labeled inputs. “No” means we would have to invent a universal rule — two rails per bay, a fittings kit per 50 ft, a gate price — and we will not. When a row says “partial,” you still owe the extras field your attention: corners and gates do not appear from fence length alone.
If you are switching types mid-design (wood privacy versus chain-link along an easement), run each mode separately. Do not average picket counts with mesh feet. The only shared numbers that transfer cleanly are measured segment lengths and the post/concrete geometry once you know post shape and hole size for that type. Print or save both workings so the lumber ticket and the chain-link ticket never get merged into one ambiguous line.
Gates break every column
Regardless of wood, vinyl, or chain-link, gate leaves are assemblies. Exclude the clear opening from the infill run, order the gate from the system you are installing, and size gate posts from the gate manufacturer or installer — not from a percentage of line posts. Depth and bags for those posts may exceed the line-post hole; calculate them as their own takeoff when the sheet says so. Keep the gate on a separate line of your shopping list so it never gets “absorbed” into picket or mesh counts.
