Fence Picket Spacing and Count

Picket count is width-plus-gap arithmetic, then waste — plus end-bay planning when you care how the last board lands. Open the dedicated fence picket calculator for exact-gap or even-spacing modes. The traps are unit conversion (feet of run, inches of face) and pretending every “1×6” is the same dressed width.

The formula

module_in = picket_width_in + gap_in
pickets = ceil((run_ft × 12 ÷ module_in) × (100 + waste_%) / 100)

Keep units consistent: feet of run become inches before dividing by an inch-wide module. Round purchase counts up. The site’s default wood waste (10%) is a labeled trade convention for culls and end cuts—not a second hidden allowance on top of another fudge factor. If you already padded the run length “just in case,” do not also crank waste to 20% without a reason.

Starting picket width

The calculator starts at 5½ inches because NIST Voluntary Product Standard PS 20-25 Table 3 lists that as the minimum dressed-dry width for nominal 6-inch softwood. Rough cedar, green boards, dog-ear profiles, and specialty pickets can differ. Measure the stack you will buy; a ⅛ in face error repeats hundreds of times along a run.

Example of why measuring matters: if you assume 5.5 in but the faces run 5.375 in with a tight privacy layout, you under-order. If you assume 6 in nominal and the faces are 5.5 in, you over-order and still may leave odd end gaps. The calculator requires the actual product width for that reason.

Worked examples (50 ft and 100 ft)

50 ft — privacy-tight (0 in gap)

ceil(600 ÷ 5.5) = 110 before waste → 120 with 10% waste

50 ft — spaced (½ in gap)

module = 6.0 in → ceil(600 ÷ 6.0) = 100 before waste → 110 with 10% waste

100 ft — same two layouts (with 10% waste)

tight → 240 pickets · spaced → 220 pickets

Same length, different appearance targets, different counts. Layout near posts may need trimming or a slight gap adjustment so the last bay does not leave a sliver—those field adjustments are why waste exists. Doubling the run roughly doubles pickets, but rounding and end-bay cleanup still reward recomputing rather than multiplying a napkin number.

Privacy versus spaced layouts

Do not prescribe a universal picket gap. Privacy goals, board movement as lumber dries, finish (paint vs stain), and any manufacturer note for a specific product all affect spacing. Tight privacy lines often run boards edge-to-edge or with a hairline reveal; shadow-line fences set an explicit gap and keep waste editable when the end bay refuses to land clean.

Spaced pickets also change wind behavior and neighbor sightlines. Those are design choices, not something a materials calculator should hide inside a fixed “¾ inch gap” default. Enter the gap you intend to build.

What picket count skips

End bays and why waste is not optional theater

Even a perfect module math leaves the last bay. Posts are not always exactly on the spacing you planned after the digger hits a root. Dog-ear pickets vary. Painted stock gets dinged in the truck. The 10% convention exists for those field truths. If you rip every end bay from a full picket and throw the offcut away, you will burn waste faster than a crew that reuses long offcuts as filler near a gate post.

When the last bay would leave a sliver narrower than you can fasten cleanly, adjust the gap slightly across the run or rip a wider end board — both are layout decisions, not calculator bugs. Re-enter the gap you actually settle on if you want the shopping count to match the fence you build. A ten-minute dry layout against the string line saves a mid-job lumber run.

Board movement and finish

Green lumber shrinks as it dries; a tight privacy fence can open hairline gaps months later. That does not mean the calculator should invent a seasonal gap for you. It means you choose a gap and finish strategy knowing the wood will move. Prefinished or kiln-dried stock behaves differently from wet cedar. If a manufacturer of a specialty picket publishes a spacing note, follow that product — our NIST starting width is a softwood dressed-dry minimum, not a cedar rough-sawn promise. Measure three boards from the stack you will buy and average them if faces vary; one skinny board repeated across a long run will open daylight you did not plan for.

What gap should I leave between pickets?

There is no universal gap. Privacy fences often run boards tight or nearly tight; spaced-picket looks leave a deliberate reveal. Material movement, finish, and manufacturer instructions matter more than a website default.
