Which MAPEI grout you are holding
MAPEI's tile grout range splits three ways for estimating purposes. Ultracolor Plus FA is the rapid-setting, fine-aggregate one — the "all-in-one" bag most tile shops push, rated for an unusually wide 1/16″ to 3/4″ joint range. Keracolor S and U are the standard sanded and unsanded cement grouts. Kerapoxy CQ is the epoxy, sold by the gallon kit rather than by weight.
Those packaging differences are why a single pounds-per-square-foot rule cannot work across the line. A 25 lb bag of Keracolor S, a 10 lb bag of Ultracolor Plus FA and a 1 gallon kit of Kerapoxy CQ are three different units of measurement, and MAPEI publishes three different tables to match.
Joint width does most of the work
People expect tile size to drive grout quantity. It matters, but joint width matters more, because the joint volume scales with width directly while the tile size only changes how much joint perimeter there is per square foot. Take one row of MAPEI's own table — 12″ × 12″ × 3/8″ tile, per 25 lb bag of Ultracolor Plus FA. At 1/8″ it covers 388 sq ft. At 1/4″, 194. At 3/4″, 65.
That is a factor of 6.0 across the same tile, from a dimension people routinely eyeball. If you are unsure of your joint width, measure it before you buy rather than after — it is the input this calculation is most sensitive to.
A note on MAPEI's own arithmetic
Worth knowing if you check this by hand. MAPEI's 10 lb and 25 lb tables for Ultracolor Plus FA are not exact multiples of one another, even though the bags hold the same grout. Their 3″ × 3″ row at a 1/4″ joint reads 30 sq ft per 10 lb and 73 per 25 lb, where 2.5× would be 75. The 12″ row at 1/8″ reads 156 and 388, against an exact 390.
Neither figure is wrong. Both tables are independently rounded to whole square feet from an underlying rate, so they drift apart by up to about 2.5% at the extremes. It is well inside MAPEI's own stated estimating tolerance, and far inside a 10% waste allowance — but it means the two tables will not reconcile perfectly, and now you know why rather than assuming somebody typo'd. Both are reproduced here exactly as published.
Chart cell or formula
When your tile size and joint width match a published cell, the calculator uses that cell and says so. Between cells it fits the standard joint-volume formula to that product's own table and tells you it is interpolating. For Ultracolor Plus FA that fit is unusually tight — median error against the published cells is under half a percent — because MAPEI publishes 16 tile sizes against 8 joint widths, which is far more of the curve than most manufacturers give. Outside a calibrated zone, roughly faces under 3 inches or joints over 3/8″, the tool stops rather than extrapolating.

Frequently asked questions
How much Ultracolor Plus FA do I need?
For 12″ × 12″ × 3/8″ tile at a 1/8″ joint, MAPEI's table gives about 388 sq ft per 25 lb bag, or 156 sq ft per 10 lb bag. Joint width dominates everything else: the same tile at a 1/4″ joint drops to 194 sq ft, and at 3/4″ to 65. Enter your actual sizes above rather than scaling a single figure.
Does Ultracolor Plus FA come in two bag sizes?
Yes — 10 lb (4.54 kg) and 25 lb (11.3 kg) — and MAPEI publishes a separate full coverage table for each. Both are presets here. Reading the 25 lb table while buying 10 lb bags under-orders by roughly two and a half times, which is the single most expensive mistake available on this page.
What is the difference between Keracolor S and Keracolor U?
S is sanded, U is unsanded, and they are packaged differently — a 25 lb bag against a 10 lb bag — so their coverage tables are not interchangeable even before the mix difference. Sanded is the usual pick for floor joints about 1/8″ and wider; unsanded suits narrow joints and soft surfaces that sand would scratch.
Can MAPEI grout be used in a 3/4 inch joint?
Ultracolor Plus FA is rated for joint widths from 1/16″ to 3/4″ (1.5 to 19 mm), which is unusually wide for a cement grout and is why its published table runs out to eight joint-width columns. Keracolor and Kerapoxy CQ have narrower published ranges. The calculator only offers each product the joint widths its own data sheet covers.
How is Kerapoxy CQ measured, if it is not sold by the bag?
By the kit. Kerapoxy CQ is a two-part epoxy sold by the US gallon, so its coverage table is stated per 1 gallon kit rather than per pound. That means bag weight is useless for comparing it against Keracolor or Ultracolor — the calculator keeps a separate table per product for exactly this reason.
How much extra grout should I order?
10% over the net figure is the usual allowance for cleanup, uneven joints and the last partial bag; MAPEI's own note on the coverage table recommends adding 5% to 10%. It is adjustable above. MAPEI also states plainly that its coverage figures are for estimating only and vary with actual tile size, exact joint width and grouting method.
