Calculator disclaimer

Measure the Build provides material-quantity estimates and educational explanations. The calculators are designed to show the working and identify the sources behind important constants, but no calculator can see the full conditions of your project.

Results are planning estimates

Calculator results are estimates for preliminary material planning. They are not bids, purchase guarantees, construction documents, engineering calculations, architectural services, code approval, permit approval, inspection approval, or manufacturer approval.

Do not rely on a result as the only basis for a purchase, structural decision, installation detail, or code-compliance decision.

Your inputs control the output

A calculator can only use the dimensions, units, product choices, spacing, pitch, depth, waste factors, and other assumptions entered or selected. A wrong measurement or unit can change the result substantially.

Measure the actual project. Confirm whether dimensions are nominal or actual. Check that feet, inches, square feet, cubic feet, yards, degrees, ratios, and product units have been entered correctly.

Defaults are not universal rules

Some constants come from manufacturer technical data, published standards, or industry documents. Others are labeled trade conventions because no universal published value exists.

Editable defaults — including waste, overage, spacing, layout, and planning depth — are starting points. They may not suit your material, site, crew, jurisdiction, installation method, or risk tolerance.

Product documents and local requirements win

Always check the current label, technical data sheet, installation instructions, warranty terms, and package coverage for the exact product you buy. Product formulations and published coverage can change after a page is verified.

Local building codes, amendments, permits, frost-depth requirements, soil conditions, wind exposure, loads, fire-rated assemblies, wet-area requirements, and instructions from the authority having jurisdiction may override a planning value shown on this site.

Where a current product document, stamped plan, engineer, building official, or other qualified professional conflicts with a Measure the Build result, follow the project-specific authoritative requirement.

Site and field conditions change quantities

Actual material use can differ because of:

• uneven or over-excavated surfaces;
• cuts, breakage, defects, damage, and unusable offcuts;
• layout direction, patterns, corners, openings, penetrations, and transitions;
• substrate condition and preparation;
• packaging, batch, dye-lot, or product-line differences;
• crew methods, mixing, placement, compaction, coverage, and cleanup;
• changes made after measurement; and
• conditions the calculator does not ask about.

Whole-unit rounding can also create overage, while field loss can create shortages. Recheck the result against a manual takeoff before ordering.

Structural, electrical, and safety limitations

The site does not replace a licensed or qualified professional. In particular:

• material counts do not size structural members or prove load capacity;
• post-depth estimates do not approve a fence, footing, frost detail, or wind design;
• roof calculations do not make a roof safe to access or walk;
• wire, conduit, voltage-drop, and ampacity information does not replace current code, equipment instructions, derating analysis, or an electrician;
• tile, grout, mortar, concrete, and waterproofing quantities do not approve an assembly or installation method; and
• a calculated quantity does not confirm that a product is suitable for the intended use.

Construction work can cause property damage, injury, or death. Use appropriate personal protective equipment, follow product safety data sheets, comply with codes and permits, and hire qualified help when the work exceeds your training or authorization.

No warranty

To the maximum extent permitted by law, calculator results and related content are provided “as is” without warranties of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, availability, or project outcome.

Corrections

If a constant, source link, formula, label, or result appears wrong, send the page URL, the value in question, and the source you are comparing through the contact page. Confirmed errors can then be corrected and re-verified.
