Square feet to tons: the asphalt tonnage formula

Every asphalt calculator runs the same four steps. Area in square feet, thickness converted from inches to feet, those multiplied to get cubic feet, then cubic feet times density divided by 2,000:

tons = (sq_ft × (thickness_in ÷ 12) × density_lb_ft3) ÷ 2,000

At the 145 lb/ft³ default that reduces to a number worth carrying in your head: roughly 18.1 tons per 1,000 square feet at 3 inches compacted, or about 6.04 tons per 1,000 sq ft for each inch of thickness. Scale it and you can sanity-check any quote in your head before you get home. The whole formula is linear in all three inputs — double the area, double the tons; double the thickness, double the tons.

How many tons for an asphalt driveway

Residential driveways cluster around a few sizes, so here is what the calculator returns for the common ones at 3 inches compacted with 10% overage. Run your own numbers above — these are for orientation, not a substitute for measuring.

Note the last row. Resurfacing an existing blacktop driveway at 1½ inches takes half the tonnage of a new 3-inch mat over the same area, which is most of why a resurfacing quote and a replacement quote are so far apart. It is also why “cost to resurface” and “cost to replace” are not the same question — different tonnage, different prep, different job.

Turning tons into cost per ton or per square foot

Most people arriving at an asphalt calculator want a dollar figure, not a tonnage. This tool deliberately stops at tons, and it is worth being straight about why: hot mix is a commodity tied to oil prices, quoted per ton, and it moves with your region, your distance from the plant, and the season. Any site publishing a single national asphalt price per ton is guessing, and the guess is stale by the time you read it.

What you can do is convert honestly, using a quote you have actually been given:

cost_per_sq_ft = material_cost ÷ sq_ft

Two things that catch people out. First, the price per ton you are quoted at the plant is material only — a contractor's price per square foot also carries mobilization, base prep, compaction, edge work and labor, which is why the two numbers never reconcile. Second, if you are comparing bids, compare them at the same compacted thickness. A bid at 2 inches against a bid at 3 inches is a third less material, and the cheaper number is not the better deal.

Why asphalt calculators disagree

Search “asphalt calculator” and the results will quietly hand you different answers for the same driveway. One assumes 145 lb per cubic foot, another 150, a third 148. None of them usually says so. The spread is not sloppiness in the arithmetic — the arithmetic is trivial — it is that each has frozen a different point on a range that is genuinely variable, and then presented it as a fact.

Compacted asphalt density is not a constant like the volume of an 80 lb bag of concrete. It is a product of the mix: the specific gravity of the aggregate, how much binder is in it, and how hard it was rolled. The trade computes it as

density_lb_ft3 = Gmm × 62.4 × (percent_compaction ÷ 100)

Gmm is the theoretical maximum specific gravity — what the mix would weigh with every air void squeezed out. Multiply it by the density of water and you get theoretical maximum density. Multiply that by the compaction actually achieved and you get what the mat weighs in place. Published Gmm values run roughly 2.4 to 2.7, so at 94% compaction the honest answer for a dense-graded mix is a band from about 140.8 to 158.4 lb/ft³ — a spread of more than 12%. On a 20-ton job that is over two tons of uncertainty, which is real money.

This calculator ships 145 lb/ft³ as its default because it sits near the middle of that band, and it says on the page that it is a planning figure rather than a specification. The working panel shows the derivation and the implied Gmm, so if you type in a density from a supplier ticket you can immediately see whether it is plausible. Enter something outside the typical range and the tool says so rather than silently computing it.

Weight, not volume — and why that trips people up

Almost every other material on this site is bought by volume or by the piece. Concrete comes in bags of known cubic feet. Shingles come in bundles per square. Asphalt does not: it comes off a truck scale in tons, priced per ton. That single difference causes most of the estimating mistakes we see quoted in contractor forums.

The consequence is that you cannot sanity-check an asphalt quantity the way you check a concrete order. Cubic yards are an intermediate step you never actually buy. At 145 lb/ft³ a cubic yard of compacted asphalt is about 1.96 tons — a number worth memorizing, but one that shifts with the mix like everything else here. The tool shows cubic feet and cubic yards alongside tons for exactly this reason: the volume is how you check the geometry, the tonnage is what you order.

Paving is also commonly bid by the square yard rather than the square foot, which is why the result blade shows both. Nine square feet to the square yard, and a square yard of 3-inch mat at the default density is a shade over a sixth of a ton.

Compacted thickness, not loose

Hot mix leaves the paver loose and is rolled down — meaningfully. Every thickness on this page is the compacted result, because that is how specifications, pay quantities and the section presets are all written. If someone quotes you a spread thickness, it is not the same number.

Thickness also does not arrive in any quantity you like. The Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association describes a 2 to 3 inch driveway as commonly placed in two compacted layers of about 1½ inches each, or alternatively 2½ inches compacted and then the remainder. That is a scheduling and jointing consideration rather than a tonnage one — two lifts of 1½ inches weigh the same as one of 3 — but it explains why a driveway quote may describe more passes than you expected.

Base course is a different purchase

The section presets above cover the three residential cases the trade associations describe: resurfacing over sound pavement at 1½ to 2 inches, asphalt over an aggregate base, and full-depth asphalt from the subgrade up at 4 inches minimum with 5 or 6 preferred. Only the asphalt thickness belongs in this calculator.

Where an aggregate base is used it is typically 6 to 8 inches of compacted stone, bought by the ton or the cubic yard from an aggregate supplier at a fraction of the price of hot mix. It is a separate line on the estimate and a separate delivery. Adding it to the asphalt thickness here would roughly triple your tonnage and your bill. Full-depth construction removes that purchase entirely at the cost of a thicker mat — which is the actual trade-off behind the two options, not a quality ranking.

Overage behaves differently here

The 10% default is a starting point drawn from trade convention, not from any published standard, and it deserves more scrutiny on asphalt than on materials you can return. Leftover bags of concrete go back to the store. Leftover hot mix cools in the truck and becomes scrap you have already paid for and now have to dispose of.

Ordering short is not free either. If the mat cools while you wait for another load, you get a cold joint — a visible seam and a weak line that tends to be the first thing to fail. On small residential jobs the plant's minimum load and the nearest full ton usually settle the question before the percentage does. On larger areas the percentage starts to matter, and it is worth asking the paving contractor what they actually order against, since they carry the risk on both sides of it.

What this tool will not do

It does not select your pavement section. Thickness comes from your soil, your climate, what will drive on it, and often a local ordinance — not from a calculator. The presets report what state asphalt pavement associations publish for residential driveways so you have a defensible starting point, but a driveway that will take delivery trucks is a different design from one that takes a sedan.

It also does not price the job. Hot mix is a commodity tied to oil, quoted per ton and varying by region, plant distance and season. Multiply the tonnage by a quote you have actually been given. Any calculator offering you a national asphalt price is guessing, and the guess ages badly.

How many tons of asphalt do I need for a driveway?

Multiply the area by the compacted thickness in feet, then by the mix density, then divide by 2,000. A 24 × 40 ft driveway at 3 inches compacted is 960 ft² × 0.25 ft = 240.0 ft³. At 145 lb/ft³ that is 34,800 lb, or 17.4 tons — about 19.1 tons with 10% overage. A 20 × 20 ft driveway needs roughly 8.0 tons on the same basis, and 1,500 ft² needs about 29.9 tons. How do you convert square feet to tons of asphalt?

tons = (sq ft × (thickness in inches ÷ 12) × density) ÷ 2,000. At 145 lb/ft³ that works out to roughly 18.1 tons per 1,000 square feet at 3 inches compacted, or about 6.04 tons per 1,000 sq ft per inch of thickness. Read it the other way and one ton covers about 83 ft² at 2 inches or 55 ft² at 3 inches — coverage halves as thickness doubles.

Is blacktop the same as asphalt?

For estimating purposes, yes. Blacktop, hot mix asphalt (HMA) and asphalt concrete all describe the same thing: graded aggregate bound with asphalt binder, mixed hot and rolled. "Blacktop" is the common homeowner term, "hot mix" is what the plant calls it, and "asphalt concrete" is what the specification calls it. The tonnage math is identical. Tar and chip (also called chip seal) is a genuinely different product — loose stone rolled into sprayed binder — and this calculator does not cover it.

What is the density of hot mix asphalt?

There is no single number, which is exactly why published calculators disagree with each other. Compacted density is the mix's theoretical maximum specific gravity (Gmm) multiplied by the density of water (62.4 lb/ft³) and by the percent compaction achieved. Gmm typically runs 2.4–2.7, so at 94% compaction a real dense-graded mix lands between about 140.8 and 158.4 lb/ft³. This tool defaults to 145 lb/ft³ for planning and lets you replace it with the figure from your mix design or delivery ticket. One cubic yard at the default works out to about 1.96 tons.
