What almost nobody tells you is that three bundles rarely cover a full 100 square feet. GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed all publish 98.4 square feet for three bundles — 1.6 square feet short of the square you are buying against.

Why three bundles is a packaging fact, not an area fact
A shingle bundle is sized around what one person can carry up a ladder — roughly 75pounds. Three of them landing near 100 square feet is a happy consequence of that weight limit, not a standard anyone is held to. No code, no ASTM specification and no manufacturer warranty says three bundles must cover a square. The square is a unit of roof area; the bundle is a unit of packaging. They were never required to line up.
What actually determines coverage is exposure — how much of each shingle stays visible once the course above laps over it. Multiply exposure by shingle length and you have the area one shingle contributes. GAF Timberline HDZ is 13.25″ by 39.375″ laid at 5.625″ exposure, so each shingle contributes 1.54 square feet — and the 64 shingles in three bundles come to 98.4 square feet. That is the 98.4 on the data sheet, arrived at from first principles. Run the same arithmetic for IKO Cambridge — a longer shingle at 5.875″ exposure — and you land on a full 100.
Only the exposure counts toward coverage
Each shingle is 13.25″ tall, but only the 5.625″ highlighted strip adds roof area — the rest is covered by the course above. At 39.375″ long that is 1.54 sq ft per shingle, which is why bundle coverage is a consequence of exposure rather than a round number.

Three of the four largest asphalt shingle brands in the United States publish the same 98.4. IKO is the outlier, and it knows it — its Cambridge data sheet lists “full square coverage” in the feature list, right alongside the note that the shingle is “IKO's special ‘Advantage’ size which is larger than many competitors' comparable product.” A manufacturer only advertises covering a full square when covering a full square is unusual.
So how many shingles are in one bundle?
Search this and you get a range — “20 to 22”, “21 to 29”, “about 20”. The vagueness is not laziness. It is the honest answer to a question with a slightly awkward premise, and it is worth understanding why, because it changes what you count when a bundle is short.
Work it from the published figures. GAF puts 64 pieces in a square, Owens Corning64, CertainTeed 65, IKO 60. Divide by the three bundles that make up a square and only one of those numbers comes out whole:

A bundle cannot hold 21.33 shingles, so the three bundles in a square are not identical. GAF publishes the split outright — its 64 pieces ship as bundles of 20, 22 and 22 — and Owens Corning gives the same fact away in its wording, listing an “Average Shingle Count per 3 Bundles” of 64 and separately “Shingles per Bundle Not less than 20”. An average and a floor, rather than a number, because there is no single number to give. CertainTeed's 65 per square cannot divide into three equal bundles at all.
IKO is the exception again, and for the same reason it covers a full square: its Cambridge data sheet states “SHINGLES/BUNDLE 20” directly, and 60 divides by three exactly. It is the only one of the four that can put an honest whole number on a bundle.
The practical consequence is small but real. If you are counting pieces to see whether a part-used bundle will finish a run, count the pieces — do not divide a square by three and trust it. And if a bundle in a fresh square looks lighter than the other two, on a GAF roof that is the 20 rather than a short pack.
What the rule of thumb costs
On a small roof, 1.6 square feet a square is noise absorbed by your waste allowance. It stops being noise as the roof grows. Three bundles of GAF cover 0.984 squares, so ordering by “three a square” buys you about 1.6% less roof than you think you are buying — and that shortfall scales linearly while your waste allowance is busy covering the thing it was meant for.
Take a 30 square roof. The rule of thumb says 90 bundles. Published GAF coverage says 92. That is 2 bundles — not a catastrophe, but it is the difference between finishing on Saturday and making a supply run on Sunday, and it is exactly the sort of gap a 10% waste allowance is supposed to absorb rather than fund.
The practical fix is not to pad the waste number. It is to divide by real coverage. Take the area you are covering, divide by 32.8 square feet rather than 33.3, and round up. The calculator above does exactly that, and shows you what the rule of thumb would have said so you can see the gap.
Starter strip and ridge cap: the bundles nobody counts
Field shingles are not a complete roof order. The first course at the eaves and rakes is starter strip, and the hips and ridges are capped with a different product again. Both are sold by thelinear foot, which means they are invisible to any calculation based on area — and they are missing from almost every answer to this question you will find.
GAF WeatherBlocker Premium starter covers 100 linear feet per bundle when installed as half sheets, and 50 linear feet per bundle as full sheets. That is a factor of two driven entirely by how the crew decides to run it, so ask before you order. GAF Seal-A-Ridge covers 25 linear feet per bundle at its 6⅔ inch exposure — the data sheet phrases it as “4 bundles cover 100 linear feet.”
Some crews still cut starter and cap from field shingles. That works, but then those bundlesdo come out of your field count and your waste factor needs to absorb the offcuts. Purpose-made accessories are cleaner to estimate and usually required for the manufacturer's enhanced warranty. Either way, decide before you count, not after.
The footprint mistake, and what pitch does
The other reliable way to under-order is to use the footprint of the house instead of the area of the roof. A roof is a slope, and a slope is longer than its shadow. The conversion is Pythagoras, not a lookup table: a roof rising R inches over a 12 inch run covers √(R² + 12²) ÷ 12 times its footprint.
At 4:12 that multiplier is 1.054, so a modest 5% addition. At 6:12 it is 1.118. At 12:12 it is √2 — your roof is 41% larger than the ground it covers. Using the footprint on a 12:12 roof would leave you short by nearly a third of the job. This is arithmetic rather than a sourced constant, which is why the calculator computes it instead of storing a table. The roof pitch chart lists every pitch with its multiplier, angle and slope percentage if you would rather read it off than compute it.
If you do not already know your pitch, measure it before you order anything — the roof pitch calculator converts a rise-over-run measurement or a phone's angle reading into the pitch, the slope percentage and the area multiplier used above. Everything downstream of that number is wrong if the number is wrong, and guessing a pitch from the ground is unreliable on anything shallower than about 6:12.
A worked example, end to end
A simple gable roof over a 40 × 30 ft footprint at 6:12, in GAF Timberline HDZ, with 140 linear feet of eave and rake and 40 linear feet of ridge:
Footprint: 40 × 30 = 1,200 sq ft.
Pitch multiplier at 6:12 is 1.1180, so the roof is 1,342 sq ft — 142 sq ft more than the footprint.
Add 10% waste: 1,476 sq ft to order, or 14.76 squares.
Field bundles: 1,476 ÷ 32.8 = 45 bundles. The rule of thumb would have said 45.
Starter: 140 ÷ 100 = 2 bundles.
Ridge cap: 40 ÷ 25 = 2 bundles.
Total: 49 bundles, of three different products.
Note how far 49 is from the 45 you would get from squares × 3. Most of that gap is the accessories, which is the point: the field shingle count was never the whole order.
Waste, and why it is a separate number
No manufacturer publishes a waste percentage. Every coverage figure on this page is for shingles as applied — it already accounts for the overlap, and it accounts for nothing else. Waste is what you lose to cutting, and cutting scales with the length of your cuts, not with the area of your roof.
That is why a simple gable starts around 10%, a roof with hips, valleys and dormers runs nearer 15%, and a genuinely cut-up roof with many planes and penetrations can reach 20%. Two roofs of identical area can sit at opposite ends of that range. Treat the default as a starting allowance and change it for the roof in front of you — and keep it separate from the coverage question, because padding waste to compensate for using the wrong coverage figure just hides the error.

Check the wrapper. Coverage is printed on every bundle, and it is the only figure that is certainly correct for the pallet in front of you — product lines get revised, and regional plants differ enough that CertainTeed publishes its Landmark weight as a range “dependent on manufacturing location.” The numbers on this page are dated and sourced below so you can see exactly what was checked and when, but the wrapper wins.
Order full squares where you can, keep the leftovers, and note the colour lot. Shingle colour is blended in production and varies between lots; a repair two years from now with a different lot is visible from the street. A spare bundle in the garage is worth more than the few dollars it cost.

How much does a square of shingles weigh?
CertainTeed publishes 211 to 225 lb per square for Landmark, noting the figure depends on which plant made them. That is roughly 70–75 lb a bundle, which matters for both dumpster sizing on a tear-off and for how much you carry up a ladder at once.
Do I need to count starter strip and ridge cap separately?
Yes, and this is the most common way an order comes up short. Starter strip and hip/ridge cap are sold by the linear foot, not by area, so they never come out of your field bundle count.
