Measuring a roof you should not be standing on
Almost nobody measures a roof by walking it with a tape, and you should not start. The workable method from the ground is to measure the building footprint — including the overhang, which is roof area even though it is not house — and then establish the pitch separately. Hold a level out from a gable end, mark 12 inches along it, and measure down to the roof line. That drop is your rise over a 12 inch run. Once you have it, the pitch reference table gives the matching angle, slope percentage and area factor for every common pitch.
Footprint times the pitch factor is the sloped area, and for a straightforward gable it is accurate enough to order against. Where it falls apart is a roof with more than one pitch — a main gable at 8:12 with a porch at 3:12 is two takeoffs, not one, and running the whole footprint at either pitch will be wrong in both directions. One thing worth checking before you order anything: how many layers are already up there. A tear-off changes the dumpster, the underlayment and often the deck repairs; a legal second layer changes none of the shingle count but does change the fasteners. Neither shows up in an area calculation, and both show up in the bill.
Why roofing is sold in squares
A roofing square is 100 square feet of finished roof, and it exists because it is a convenient size for pricing labor and material together. Suppliers quote in squares, estimators bid in squares, and shingles are packaged three bundles to the square. If you ask for 24 squares you will be handed 72 bundles.
The reason a roof square calculator is worth having is that the packaging and the unit are not the same thing. Three bundles is what you are sold per square; 98.4 square feet is what three bundles of GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed actually cover. IKO Cambridge is the exception at a full 100. So the honest divisor for field shingles is 32.8 square feet a bundle rather than 33.3 — a difference of about 1.6%, which is small on a garage and a bundle or two on a house. Order in whole squares where the supplier will let you. Partial squares get made up out of broken bundles, color is blended per production lot, and a repair in three years against a different lot is visible from the curb. The leftover bundle in the garage is cheap insurance.
Three products, not one
The single most common way a shingle order comes up short is treating the roof as one product. Field shingles cover the plane. The first course at every eave and rake is starter strip. Every hip and ridge is capped with a third product again. Starter and cap are sold by thelinear foot, which makes them invisible to any calculation that starts from area — which is why they have their own inputs above, and why leaving them at zero is a decision rather than a default.
Some crews still cut starter and cap out of field bundles. That is legitimate, but it moves those bundles into the field count and pushes the offcuts into your waste allowance, so decide which way you are doing it before you count rather than after. Purpose-made accessories are also usually a condition of the manufacturer's enhanced warranty, which tends to settle the argument.
What the count deliberately excludes: underlayment and ice barrier, which come in rolls with their own lap rules; drip edge and valley metal, sold by the stick; nails, whose quantity depends on the fastening pattern and the wind zone; and ridge vent, which competes for the same linear feet as your ridge cap. Every one of those is a different unit with a different source, and guessing them from a bundle count would be exactly the kind of invented number this site exists to avoid.
