How drywall gets taken off
A room takeoff starts with perimeter, not floor area. Add the room length and width, double that perimeter, and multiply by wall height. The ceiling is a separate length-by-width plane. Pros then decide which openings are worth deducting and convert the net square feet into the panel length that will actually arrive on the job.
The easy mistake is subtracting every hole from the area as though the cut piece returns to inventory. USG’s estimating guide treats large doorways and picture windows as deductions, but says not to bother with small boxes and fittings. That reflects how sheets are installed: a receptacle cutout still comes out of a full panel, and a narrow offcut may not fit anywhere useful. Because USG gives no numerical opening threshold, this tool asks for one measured total instead of silently assigning “standard” doors and windows.
Sheet length changes the job
The coverage math is fixed—32 sq ft for 4×8, 40 for 4×10, and 48 for 4×12—but the best order is not always the sheet with the largest face. Longer panels can span more of a wall and cut joint footage, while 4×8 sheets are easier to carry through finished rooms and stairways. Check that the chosen length can reach the room before optimizing seams on paper.
This v1 result is an area takeoff, not a layout optimizer. A real horizontal-versus-vertical plan needs individual wall lengths, stud or joist direction, opening positions, seam rules, and a decision about which offcuts can be reused. USG notes that long horizontal panels can reduce wall joints; National Gypsum recommends running ceiling panels perpendicular to framing to minimize sag. Follow the product instructions and any fire-rated assembly rather than treating orientation as a generic calculator toggle.
What this count leaves out
Board thickness and type depend on the wall or ceiling assembly, moisture exposure, framing, and fire requirements; this tool counts faces only. It also does not estimate joint compound, tape, screws, or repair labor. Joint compound has coat- and product-specific coverage, so it belongs in a separate drywall mud calculator rather than being guessed from sheet count.
The 10% waste field is equally visible and adjustable. It matches the installation-waste scenario used in a USG environmental declaration, while National Gypsum’s calculator explicitly excludes waste. Treat it as a starting allowance for cuts and damage, then change it for the room you are actually hanging.
