Sonotube Size Chart

Sonotube is Sonoco's brand name, but on a jobsite it means any round cardboard form. The three brands you can actually buy stock different diameters, and only one of them tells you its tolerance. Here is what each one sells, what every size holds per foot, and why three manufacturer bag charts that look different are the same arithmetic underneath.

Stock sizes by brand

The first three rows are what a home center carries. The last two are contractor lines, quoted as a span rather than a size list, and ordered through a distributor.

Two documentation quirks worth knowing, because they will look like errors otherwise. QUIKRETE's data sheet lists 8″, 10″, 12″ in its Sizes paragraph, then prints a 6″ column in its capacity table. And Sonoco's two current documents disagree with each other on Builder's Tube lengths — the product leaflet says 4′, 8′, 12′, the product-line brochure says 4′ only. Both carry the same 2016 copyright.

Concrete per foot of fill

A form tube is a cylinder, so volume per foot is π × radius² and nothing else. These are exact figures at the nominal diameter, not rounded to a chart — bag rates are deliberately left fractional, because a rate is not a purchase.

Bag rates use QUIKRETE's published yields of 0.45 ft³ per 60 lb bag and 0.6 ft³ per 80 lb bag. Other brands of mix vary slightly; check the bag you are buying.

The same geometry rounded up to bags you can actually put in a cart, per tube, at the four depths every manufacturer chart uses. Multiply by the number of piers, then add waste.

All three bag charts are the same arithmetic

I checked every printed cell in QUIKRETE's capacity table and Sakrete's 80 lb table against ceil(cylinder volume ÷ bag yield). All thirty-six cells match exactly — QUIKRETE's 60 lb and 80 lb tables across four diameters and four depths, and Sakrete's 80 lb table across five diameters and four depths. Not one cell carries a fudge factor, a waste allowance, or a product-specific adjustment. That audit is pinned by a test in this repo, so if the geometry or the cited bag yields ever change, the check fails rather than the page quietly going stale.

This matters more than it sounds. It means you do not need the chart for the tube you own — you need π, the bag yield off the sack, and a ceiling function. It also means a chart that disagrees with the geometry is telling you something else, and it is worth knowing what.

Where the published numbers do drift

Sonoco is the exception, because it publishes rates rather than whole bags. Its cubic-foot figures are the geometry rounded up to two decimals — 0.80 for a 12″ tube against 0.785 exact, about 1.9% heavy. Harmless. The bag rates drift further: Sonoco lists 2 sixty-pound bags per foot for the same 12″ tube, where the arithmetic gives 1.745. That is 15% over.

On a single mailbox post that is one spare bag. On sixteen deck piers at 4 ft it is closer to eleven bags of concrete you bought and did not use, which is a real number of dollars and a real trip to return them. The fix is not to distrust Sonoco — it is to treat a per-foot rate as a rate, do the multiplication at your actual depth, and round up once at the end instead of once per foot.

Footing bases, and what fits what

A bell-shaped plastic footing form widens the bearing area at the bottom of a pier and gets poured at the same time as the column. Sonoco publishes both the fit and the concrete volume, which is the one genuine size-compatibility table in this whole category:

Note how much that adds. A TB 32 base is 7 ft³ on its own — more concrete than 8.9 feet of the 12″ column sitting on top of it. If you are pricing a pier and you forgot the base, you are not slightly under, you are about half under.

What this chart cannot tell you

Which diameter to use. That is the question behind most searches that land here, and it is not a size-chart question — it comes from the load above, the frost depth where you are, the bearing capacity of your soil, the deck or post hardware instructions, and whatever your building department wants stamped. A 12″ pier is not "usually fine"; it is fine or not depending on four things this page knows nothing about.

What the chart is for is the step after that decision: you have a diameter and a depth from the drawings or the permit, and you need to know what to buy. What sizes do Sonotubes come in?

The DIY line — Sonotube Builder's Tube — comes in 6″, 8″, 10″, 12″ diameters. Sakrete Form Tubes go further, to 8″, 10″, 12″, 16″, 18″, and QUIKRETE QUIK-TUBES list 8″, 10″, 12″. Above that you are into contractor lines: Sonotube FinishFree spans 12″ to 48″ and Sonotube commercial 6″ to 60″, neither of which a home center stocks.

How much concrete does a 12 inch Sonotube hold per foot?

0.785 cubic feet per foot of fill — π × (6″ radius)² × 12″, converted to feet. Sonoco publishes it as 0.8, rounded up. At 0.6 ft³ per 80 lb bag that is 1.31 bags for every foot you fill, so a 4 ft pour needs 6 whole bags.

How many bags of concrete for a 10 inch tube 4 feet deep?

4 bags at 80 lb, or 5 at 60 lb. That is 2.18 ft³ of concrete. QUIKRETE's own data sheet prints the same two numbers, because the table is the geometry rounded up — not a separate measurement.

What size Sonotube do I need for a 4x4 or 6x6 post?

No manufacturer publishes a post-size-to-tube-size table, and the rules of thumb you will find on forums are not sourced. What is published is footing-form compatibility: Sonoco lists Tube Base TB 22 as fitting 8″ and 10″ forms, TB 28 as fitting 8″ through 12″, and TB 32 as fitting 12″ through 18″. Pier diameter itself is a structural question — it comes from the load, your frost depth, the soil, and the deck or post hardware instructions, not from the post cross-section.

Why do the Sonoco and QUIKRETE charts give different bag counts?

They answer different questions. Sonoco prints a rate — 2 sixty-pound bags per foot for a 12″ tube. QUIKRETE prints whole bags to buy, which means every cell is rounded up. Sonoco's rate is also rounded: the exact figure is 1.745 bags per foot, so the published 2 runs about 15% heavy. Neither is wrong; only one of them is a shopping list.

Can a form tube be used above ground?

All three manufacturers say the same thing: up to 3 feet above grade, with added bracing — a collar or a wooden frame and side braces — once the tube stands 2 feet or more above the ground line. Sonoco also rules out mechanical vibrators in Builder's Tube, and none of these forms is designed to be stripped unless you use a release agent first.
